Frequently asked questions

Should I move my funds to the UK before applying for a Tier 1 Investor Visa?

You do not need to do this. You can rely on funds that are held in an overseas financial institution, provided they are freely transferable to the UK and that the institution holding the funds can, and is willing to, confirm this in writing.

Do I need to have held my investment funds for at least two years?

No. If you have held your investment funds for less than two years then you can still qualify for a Tier 1 Investor Visa. If your funds have not been held in a regulated financial institution for at least 2 years prior to application then a detailed audit trail of source of funds will be required.

Can I rely on funds that I have already invested in the UK?

Yes, you can qualify for a Tier 1 Investor Visa by relying on funds that you invested in the UK up to 12 months before the date of application.

Do I need a UK bank account or stockbroker account?

Yes. You will need to have opened an account with an FCA-regulated financial institution for the purpose of investing at least £2m in the UK.

I need to open a UK bank account or stockbroker account – can you help with this?

We have long-standing relationships with some of the UK’s leading investment managers and private bankers, who support us in helping Tier 1 Investor Visa clients to open UK bank accounts or stockbroker accounts.

What is the minimum amount I can invest?

You will need to invest at least £2m in either share capital or loan capital in qualifying UK Companies.

Are UK Government bonds still a Tier 1 investment opportunity?

UK Government bonds have not been a Tier 1 qualifying investment since 29th March 2019. Tier 1 Investor Visa holders can still invest in UK Government bonds, but any such investment must be made outside the Tier 1 Investor Visa scheme.

Are there any other restrictions on investments I should consider?

The Immigration Rules for Tier 1 Investors contain restrictions on permitted investments, such as those in offshore companies or trusts, open-ended investment companies and businesses mainly engaged in property investment, property management or property development.

Does the Tier 1 Investor visa lead to permanent residency in the UK?

You may be eligible for permanent residency under the Tier 1 Investor Visa route if you invest at least £2m and maintain your investment. You must also have resided in the UK as a Tier 1 Investor for a continuous period of five years. If you invest more than this, you may be eligible for permanent residency in a shorter space of time.

When can I apply for Citizenship?

Citizenship can be applied for at least 12 months after achieving permanent residency, with a minimum of five years since entry to the UK.

If permanent residency has been achieved at around two or three years, the investor must wait until the five year mark to be eligible to apply for citizenship. If permanent residency has been achieved at around five years, then the investor would be eligible to apply for citizenship 12 months thereafter.

When can my family apply for Citizenship?

Dependants can apply for citizenship 12 months after the first five years of being in the UK, or immediately after the main investor has received a British passport – whichever is sooner.
